Ramadan Fasting Rules: What Breaks the Fast, and What Does Not
Who must fast, what breaks a Ramadan fast, what does not, who is exempt, and when you make a day up or pay fidya. A scan-able guide, not a fatwa.

Most people do not break a fast because they studied the wrong book. They break it at 4pm, thirsty, unsure, and then spend the evening on a group chat that has five answers.
This page is a table you can scan before you panic. It is teaching, not a fatwa. Where the schools honestly disagree, we say so. Where your body or your job is unusual, a local teacher who can hear your case is the right last click, not a comment section.
The aim of the month is taqwa, not a perfect legal exam (Qur'an 2:183). Allah also said He wants ease for you, not hardship, so that you complete the count (Qur'an 2:185). Ease is not laziness. It is the exemptions He wrote Himself.
A rule you understand at 4pm is worth more than a lecture you cannot remember when your mouth is dry.
Who must fast
The Ramadan fast is fard on a Muslim who is adult, of sound mind, and physically able. Children are taught gradually. They are not sinners for a short try that ends at noon.
If you recently became Muslim, the obligation starts when the month finds you in Islam. Days before that are not a debt.
Niyyah is in the heart before Fajr. We unpacked the spoken formula, and why it is not a password, in the iftar dua.
What breaks the fast
These break the day if you do them on purpose, after true dawn and before Maghrib:
| Act | What follows |
|---|---|
| Eating or drinking knowingly | The day is void. You make it up (qada). |
| Sexual intercourse during the fasting hours | The day is void. Qada, and the well-known kaffarah (a heavy expiation). Ask a teacher for the details of your case. |
| Making yourself vomit | Widespread ruling: the day is void and you make it up. Unintentional vomiting does not. |
| Menstruation or postnatal bleeding beginning | The fast of that day ends. The days are made up later. The prayers of those days are not. |
| Nutrition that reaches the stomach on purpose (including, in many fatwas, feeding through a tube) | Treat it as food. A doctor plus a teacher, not a forum. |
Kaffarah for intercourse in the day is a separate, serious chapter (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Fasting). We will not compress it into a slogan. If that is your question, sit with someone qualified the same week. Shame is a worse counsellor than knowledge.
What does not break the fast
Allah fed him and gave him drink, the Prophet ﷺ said of the one who eats or drinks forgetfully. Complete the fast (Sahih al-Bukhari 1933). Do not punish yourself for a lapse of memory. Spit what is still in the mouth, remember, and go on.
Also generally not a breaker, when you are not trying to eat:
- Rinsing the mouth and nose in wudu, if you do not swallow on purpose
- A taste that does not go down (some allow a careful taste when cooking; others dislike it: do not make it a habit)
- Unintentional vomit
- Blood tests, most injections that are not food, eye drops, asthma inhalers: ikhtilaf. This is exactly where a named scholar for your madhhab saves you from two weeks of fear
- Swallowing saliva, dust you could not avoid, or what remains after a sincere rinse
If you are unsure and the sky is still clearly day, stop the doubtful act and ask later. Do not invent a third meal "just in case the ruling is kind."
Who may skip a day, without sin
Allah named illness and travel in the same breath as the command (Qur'an 2:184 to 2:185). The mercy is as revealed as the obligation.
| Situation | Usual path | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Illness that fasting would worsen or delay | Skip, then qada | Your doctor describes the body. A teacher applies the rule. |
| Travel of the kind that permits qasr | Skip or fast, then qada for days skipped | "Long distance" is not one number in every school. Follow the one you pray with. |
| Menstruation or nifas | Must skip | Qada of the fasts. No qada of the salah. Full treatment in our women's prayer guide. |
| Pregnancy or breastfeeding, if fasting harms mother or child | Skip | Most say qada. Some cases move toward fidya. Do not decide this from a reel. |
| Old age or chronic illness with no hope of later fasting | Skip | Fidya: feeding a poor person for each day, as the verse allows for those who can only fast with extreme difficulty. |
| A new Muslim, a child, someone whose mind is not sound | Not obliged | Teach with gentleness. |
Fidya is not a fine you pay so you can eat in comfort. It is the door Allah opened for a body that will not meet the fast again.
Qada, fidya, and the day you owe
Qada means you fast a later day, any time before the next Ramadan if you can. Do not let last year's days pile up without a plan. Write the number. A private tally on your phone is enough.
Fidya means you cannot reasonably expect to fast those days at all. Food for a poor person, per day. Ask your mosque what that costs this year where you live.
A day you broke on purpose, without a valid excuse, is heavier than a day of illness. Make it up. Add whatever extra repentance your teacher names. Do not hide it until the next February and hope the month erases arithmetic.
The start and end of the eating window are Fajr and Maghrib. That clock is in suhoor and Fajr. Iftar is not a third timetable.
A tired-afternoon sequence
- If you ate by mistake: spit, remember, continue. The day is alive (Bukhari 1933).
- If blood has begun: the fast of this day ends. Rest. The salah of these days is lifted. The fasts wait for you with kindness.
- If you are too ill to stand the rest of the light: break, drink, and intend qada. That is obedience, not failure.
- If you are angry at yourself for a real, knowing bite: stop, make tawbah, and book the qada. Then go pray Asr. A ruined fast is not a reason to ruin the prayer.
The last line is the one this site exists to protect. The month is famous for hunger. It will be judged, first, on salah.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does brushing my teeth break the fast?
Not if you do not swallow the paste or the water on purpose. Be gentle. Spit well. If the fear is eating you, finish the brushing before Fajr.
I ate at 5am and my app says Fajr was 4:52. Is the day broken?
If you knew Fajr had entered and you kept eating, treat the day as broken and make it up. If you were following a time you trusted and later found another calendar, that is a method problem, not automatically a sin. Align the house on one calculation method tonight.
Do I make up fasts I missed for menses, and also the prayers?
Fasts: yes. Prayers: no. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) taught that this is what they were commanded (Sahih Muslim). We walk through that mercy in the women's guide.
Can I swallow my own saliva?
Yes. You are not asked to dry your mouth for sixteen hours.
What if I cannot fast this Ramadan at all?
If the inability is temporary, plan qada. If it is lasting, ask about fidya. Either path is still inside the verse. Isolation and guilt are not.
Learn the table. Keep a teacher you can text. Then put the phone down and pray the prayer that is due. A fast you understood will outlast a fast you were afraid of.
