How to Finish the Quran in Ramadan: A Juz and Pages Plan
A calm khatam plan for Ramadan: one juz a day, pages after each salah, listening versus reciting, and what to do when you fall behind. No guilt.

Every year the same quiet panic arrives around day eleven. The juz chart on the fridge is already three squares behind. Taraweeh is in juz 9 and you are still in al-Baqarah. Someone in the family finished last week, or says they did.
The Quran was sent down in this month as guidance (Qur'an 2:185). That is the reason people suddenly want a khatam. Wanting is not a plan. A plan is a page that already has a time of day. Finishing is recommended. It is not a sixth pillar. Falling behind is not a sin. Quitting because you fell behind is how a good intention dies of shame.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the most generous of people, and he was most generous in Ramadan when Jibril met him. Jibril used to meet him every night of Ramadan and review the Quran with him (Sahih al-Bukhari 6). The Sunnah of the month is a living Book, night after night, not a streak you perform for a chart.
Recite what you can carry. A page you heard is still the Book. A juz you rushed and hated is how people stop opening it in Shawwal.
The arithmetic, without romance
A standard Madinah mushaf is 604 pages, 30 juz. That is the edition most plans assume. Other prints differ. Count your book.
| Pace | Each day | After each of the five | Who it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Juz a day | 1 juz (about 20 pages) | About 4 pages | A reader who already has a seat |
| Half juz | About 10 pages | About 2 pages | A workday, a new habit, a tired body |
| One hizb | Half a juz | Same as half juz, named the old way | People who think in hizb |
| A page after salah | 5 pages | 1 page | The honest starting line |
Twenty pages looks small on a table. At 11pm after a long fast it is not small. If four pages after each prayer is fantasy, one page is sincerity. The prep article said this before the month. It is still true on night 1.
A 29 day Ramadan does not ruin a 30 juz plan. Recite a little more on two days, or finish the last juz on Eid morning, or let the last pages spill into Shawwal without writing yourself a verdict.
Listening and reciting
Both are the Quran.
Reciting with the tongue, even slowly, even with mistakes you are repairing, is the habit the salaf meant by tilawah. Listening to a careful reciter while the page is open trains the eye and the ear together. Driving, cooking, holding a child: the audio can run. The page, when you can sit, keeps it from becoming wallpaper.
Women who are menstruating: the schools differ on touching a mus-haf and on verbal recitation. Many contemporary teachers allow recitation from memory or from a phone, and ask for a barrier or wudu-sensitive handling of a printed mushaf. This is ikhtilaf. Do not invent a private ban that keeps you from the Book for a week. Ask someone local, then stay with the Quran in the form they permit. The women's guide covers the salah side. The Quran side is a question for a teacher, not for a comment section.
Taraweeh is one way a community hears the Book. It is not your only way, and it is not a substitute for a page you own. If the imam is fast and you are lost, listen. Do your own pages at another hour. The taraweeh guide is for the standing. This page is for the sitting.
A day that can survive a job
- After Fajr: two to four pages, before the phone. The house is quiet. The fast has not yet become heavy.
- After Dhuhr or Asr: two pages if the afternoon is the hole in your day. A stairwell and a pocket mushaf are a valid desk.
- After Maghrib: two pages before the meal becomes a party. Dates, Maghrib, a page, then food.
- After Isha: whatever is left, or nothing if Fajr will pay for it. A khatam that spends the dawn prayer is a bad trade. We said the same about salah in Ramadan.
Write the pages on a card in the mushaf. Not in a streak app you will dread. A pencil mark in the margin is enough.
If you cannot read Arabic yet, a line-by-line audio with the page in front of you is still a Ramadan. Meaning in your language, a little each day, is not a lesser worship. It is how the Book enters a new tongue.
When you fall behind
You will. A fever, a guest, a night shift, a day you simply did not. Shame is a poor reciter.
Do not "catch up" by swallowing four juz after midnight. That is how people start hating the sound of their own voice.
- Recite today's portion, even if yesterday is empty.
- Add two or four extra pages, not twenty.
- If the gap is large, change the target. Half a juz is a real month. A full khatam can become a khatam by mid-Shawwal.
- If you finished nothing for a week, open the page you stopped on. Not page 1. The Book does not require a theatrical restart.
Allah is with a servant as long as the servant is with Him. A late page is still a page. The last ten nights, when they come, are not a punishment for a thin juz chart. They are another opening. Walk into them with whatever you have. The last ten nights guide is for that door.
Jibril reviewed the Quran with the Prophet ﷺ every night of the month (Sahih al-Bukhari 6). Review is a loop, not a trophy. When you close a khatam, begin again. When you do not close one, you are still in the loop.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to finish the Quran in Ramadan?
No. It is a beloved custom, not an obligation. Reciting regularly is the sunnah of the month. Completing is a gift if it fits.
How many pages is a juz?
In a 604-page, 15-line Madinah mushaf, a juz is about twenty pages. Check the juz marks in your own edition. Do not trust a screenshot of someone else's book.
Does listening count?
Listening is rewardable. Reciting with the tongue is a different act. Do both if you can. If you can only listen, listen. Do not wait for a perfect tajwid course to begin.
What if Ramadan is 29 days?
Recite a little more on two days, finish on Eid, or continue into Shawwal. A 29 day month is not a failed khatam.
I only know a few surahs. Should I still try?
Yes. Repeat what you know with presence. Add one new short surah. A khatam can wait until the Arabic is stronger. The month will still accept the surah you have.
Can I read from my phone?
Yes. A phone mushaf is a mushaf for reading. Many scholars still prefer wudu when possible, and care with it in a bathroom. The tool is not the problem. The scroll next to the mushaf app is the problem.
Mark today's page. Close the book on a line you can find tomorrow. The One who sent the Book down in this month is not waiting to see whether your fridge chart is green. He is near. Call on Him from the page you are actually on (Qur'an 2:186).
