How to Pray Taraweeh: 8 or 20, Home or Masjid
What taraweeh is, the hadith of standing Ramadan, why 8 and 20 both exist, how to pray it at home, and how Witr fits. No tribalism, fard first.

Taraweeh is not a second Ramadan. It is the night leaning in after Isha, when the community stands and the Quran is given more breath than the day allowed.
The Prophet ﷺ said: whoever stands Ramadan in faith, seeking the reward, his previous sins are forgiven (Sahih al-Bukhari 2009). He did not say "whoever completes twenty." He did not say "whoever films the imam." He said qiyam: you stand, with iman, hoping.
This guide is how to stand without turning the night into a fight about numbers.
Eight prayed with a present heart will outlast twenty you resent. Twenty prayed in a living masjid will outlast eight you used as a weapon.
What taraweeh is
Taraweeh means the rests between sets. You pray two, you sit, you pray two. In many mosques those pairs add up to eight, or to twenty, then Witr. The prayer is nafl. Missing it is not a sin. Keeping it is one of the sweetest customs of the month.
It is the Ramadan face of qiyam al-layl. Outside the month we often call the same night prayer tahajjud. Inside the month the ummah has given it a room after Isha and a name. The sunnah and nafl guide is the wider map. This page is the Ramadan room.
Pray Isha first. Always. A person who arrives late still owes the fard before they join the extra.
Eight, twenty, and why both exist
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed in Ramadan. She said he did not go beyond eleven rak'ah in Ramadan or in any other month: four, then four, then three (Sahih al-Bukhari 1147; Sahih Muslim 738a). "Do not ask about their beauty and their length."
That is the Prophetic ceiling of his own habit, not a ban on more. He also said night prayer is two by two (a well-known report in the two Sahihs). Quality and pairs: that is the spine.
In the time of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) people were praying separately in the masjid. He gathered them behind one reciter. The later, widespread practice of twenty rak'ah grew in that communal soil. It is how a huge part of the ummah has stood for centuries. It is not a bid'ah you must hunt. It is not the only door you may use.
So:
- Eight (plus Witr) matches what Aisha described of his ﷺ night, if you count 4+4+3 as the shape.
- Twenty (plus Witr) matches what most city mosques will actually run, and what your parents may have known as "taraweeh."
- Something in between, at home, two by two, for as long as you can stay kind, is also qiyam.
Do not break a friendship over this. Do not leave a masjid in anger because they chose the other number. Follow the imam of the place you are in. At home, choose the length that leaves Fajr alive.
How to pray it at home
You already know how to pray. Taraweeh is the same salah: takbir, Fatiha, a portion, ruku, sujud, two by two.
- Isha, fard, then the sunnah of Isha if you keep it.
- Two rak'ah of taraweeh. Salam.
- Rest as long as you need. Water, a quiet sit, nothing on the phone that will steal the next set.
- Repeat until you have prayed what you intended.
- Witr: one or three, as you learned. Recite a short surah. Du'a if you know it.
- Sleep in a way that still reaches Fajr.
Women may pray this at home, and many scholars preferred the home for them. Women may also pray in the masjid if the space is dignified and they want the Quran out loud. Both are doors. No one gets to shame either choice.
If you do not have the Quran memorized, recite what you have. Repeat a short surah with presence. Listening to a reciter while you stand, if you are following a live imam, is the masjid model. A recording in an empty room is a weaker substitute. Standing with what you know is stronger than performing for a speaker.
The masjid, without romance
Congregation has a light the house does not. The reward of praying with others is well known. A living row in Ramadan can carry a tired person farther than willpower.
It can also spend your Fajr, your sleep, and your patience with your family. Leave after eight if twenty regularly ruins dawn. Sit a set out if you are dizzy from the fast. You are not a coward. You are keeping the fard in charge of the nafl.
Children in the row: better a short night they love than a long night they hate. Teach them two rak'ah and a date. Let the love arrive before the count.
Witr, and the rest of the night
Witr is the odd seal. The Prophet ﷺ did not abandon it. If taraweeh is your only qiyam, pray Witr at the end of it. If you know you will rise in the last third, you may delay Witr and make that rising your tahajjud. Do not lie to yourself about the rising. A Witr you actually pray beats a planned last-third that never happens.
There is no required number of pages. A juz a night is a beautiful custom for a khatam in thirty days. It is not a condition of a valid taraweeh. If the imam is fast and you are lost, your job is still the ruku and the sujud, done on time, with the row.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is taraweeh obligatory?
No. It is a strongly loved nafl of the month. Skipping it is not a sin. Skipping Isha in order to rest for taraweeh is backwards.
Is 8 rak'ah or 20 the "correct" taraweeh?
Both have a home in the ummah. His ﷺ own night was eleven including Witr. The communal twenty is an old, widespread practice from the time the people were gathered in one row. Pray with your imam. At home, pray what you can perfect.
Can I read from the mushaf while I pray taraweeh?
Many allow it for taraweeh, especially for a hafiz leading or a person praying alone who would otherwise freeze. Some dislike it. If your school is strict, recite from memory, even if short. If you use a mushaf, keep the movements of salah intact.
Do women have to pray taraweeh in the mosque?
No. Home is valid and often easier. The masjid is open if the space is respectful and they want it.
I only have twenty minutes after Isha. Is that enough?
Yes. Two rak'ah, Witr, and sleep that protects Fajr is a complete night for a tired worker. Add later if the month gets kinder.
Stand if you can. Sit a set if you must. Follow the row you are in. Go home in time for dawn. The forgiveness in Bukhari 2009 was tied to faith and hope, not to winning an argument about twenty.
