Last 10 Nights of Ramadan and Laylat al Qadr: Odd Nights, Not a Date

How to walk the last ten nights: odd nights, Aisha's graded dua, i'tikaf in brief, and the expected 2027 window. We will not crown the 27th.

A small hexagonal brass lantern with a single candle burning on a dark stone windowsill, faint gold stars in a deep navy night beyond the glass, no crescent and no date.

A poster will tell you it is the 27th. A cousin will swear his grandmother never missed that night. An app will drop a gold badge on one square of the calendar and go quiet for the other nine.

We will not do that.

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan (Sahih al-Bukhari 2017). He hid it after wanting to tell the ummah, and the knowledge was taken. Islam Q&A is blunt: it is not possible for anyone to be certain that a particular night is Laylat al Qadr (IslamQA 50693). Treating the 27th as confirmed is how people sleep the 21st, the 23rd, the 25th, and the 29th.

The night is better than a thousand months (Qur'an 97:3). A thousand months is a lifetime of nights. One night, hidden, so that a servant keeps walking.

Search. Do not crown. The people who found it were usually the people still standing on the nights nobody filmed.

What the night is

"Indeed, We sent it down on the Night of Qadr. And what will make you realize what the Night of Qadr is? The Night of Qadr is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein, by permission of their Lord, for every matter. It is peace until the rising of dawn." (Qur'an 97:1-5)

The Quran was sent down in Ramadan (Qur'an 2:185). Surah al-Qadr names the night that sending is tied to. Whoever stands Laylat al Qadr in faith, seeking the reward, his previous sins are forgiven. The same is said of fasting the month (Sahih al-Bukhari 1901).

You stand. You do not have to "feel" a meteorological sign. Some reports mention a quiet, pleasant night. Those signs are later descriptions, not a test you must pass before the dua counts. If the night felt ordinary and you prayed it anyway, you did the thing he ﷺ asked.

Odd nights, and how to count them

The last ten days are the last ten of your month. If Ramadan is 30 days, they are 21 through 30. If it is 29, they begin a day earlier. The Islamic night starts at Maghrib. The "night of the 27th" is the evening that begins when the 26th day's Maghrib comes in, and it runs until Fajr of the 27th.

Odd nights: 21, 23, 25, 27, 29. Some scholars include the even nights of the last ten as well, because other wordings say "search in the last ten" without the odd restriction. The cautious person treats all ten as live, and the odd ones as the nights he refuses to waste.

When the last ten began, Aisha said, the Prophet ﷺ would tighten his waist wrapper, stay awake at night, and wake his family (Sahih al-Bukhari 2024). Tightening the wrapper is work, not a costume. Sleep less than you did in week two. Not zero. A body that dies at Fajr because you "maxed" night 21 has misunderstood the assignment.

Protect the five first. A last-ten plan that spends Fajr is a bad plan. We wrote that in salah during Ramadan and in the taraweeh guide. It is louder here.

If you will stand extra after Isha, tahajjud is the name of that standing when it is not the communal taraweeh. Two raka'at you are present in will outlast a program you resent.

The dua Aisha was taught

She asked: Messenger of Allah, if I know which night is the Night of Qadr, what should I say? He said:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul-'afwa fa'fu 'anni.

"O Allah, You are Pardoning, You love pardon, so pardon me."

This is Sunan Ibn Majah 3850. Darussalam graded it sahih. It is the wording without extras.

A parallel report in Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3513 adds kareem ("Generous") after 'afuwwun. Tirmidhi called that version hasan sahih. Darussalam also marked it sahih. The extra word is widely used. The leaner line is the one we put first, because it is the shared core.

Say it in Arabic if you can. Say it in the language you think in if you cannot. The night is not a spelling test. The ask is afw: not only that the sin be hidden, but that it be wiped, as if the record were released.

This is not the only dua of the last ten. Istighfar, salawat, the adhkar after salah, the Quran you already opened: all of it belongs. If you only remember one sentence between Maghrib and Fajr, remember this one.

I'tikaf, said briefly

The Prophet ﷺ used to practice i'tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan until Allah took him, and then his wives practiced it after him (Sahih al-Bukhari 2026). The Quran already names the retreat: do not be intimate with your spouses while you are akifun in the mosques (Qur'an 2:187).

I'tikaf is to remain in a masjid, for worship, with a niyyah. The complete sunnah is ten days. A shorter stay that a mosque allows is better than a fantasy ten you cannot take. Women may sit i'tikaf where the space and the fiqh of that mosque allow. Ask before you arrive with a suitcase.

Most of us will not be in a masjid for ten days. That does not retire the last ten. It means you build a smaller retreat: phone in another room after Isha, a corner that is only for Quran and salah, fewer invitations that are only food. The pocket version of that retreat is digital i'tikaf. It is not a substitute for the masjid. It is what a warehouse job can actually do.

The 2027 window (pencil only)

If the first fast is Monday 8 February 2027, as the dates hub currently expects:

  • The last ten nights open around the evening of Friday 26 or Saturday 27 February.
  • Odd nights then fall in the stretch from late February into the first days of March.
  • Eid is expected around 8 or 9 March.

If your community starts a day later, slide the whole window. If the month is 29 days, the last ten begin a night earlier than a 30 day month. We will not print "Laylat al Qadr 2027 is March 5." That sentence is how a hub becomes a liar.

Come back when the crescent of Ramadan is seen. The first night will tell you when the last ten begin. Until then, this is arithmetic, not a sighting.

A night you can keep

  1. Maghrib on time, a short iftar, then Isha.
  2. Taraweeh if you can stay present. Home if the masjid will spend Fajr.
  3. Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul-'afwa fa'fu 'anni.
  4. Quran, even two pages.
  5. Sleep enough that Fajr is possible.
  6. Repeat on the next odd night. And the even ones, if you have the body.

Deeny can make Isha and Fajr unmistakable in a week when the clock feels holy and the group chat is loud. It cannot find Laylat al Qadr for you. That search was left in your hands on purpose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Laylat al Qadr always the 27th?

No. The strongest instruction is to search the odd nights of the last ten (Sahih al-Bukhari 2017). Many of the salaf favoured the 27th. Favour is not certainty. Do not sleep the other odds.

What is the dua for Laylat al Qadr?

The report Aisha brought: Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul-'afwa fa'fu 'anni (Sunan Ibn Majah 3850, sahih). Some copies add kareem. The ask is pardon.

When do the last ten nights start in 2027?

Around the evening of 26 or 27 February if the first fast is 8 February. Confirm once Ramadan has actually begun. The hub holds the live dates.

Do I have to stay awake all night?

No. He ﷺ stood the night and woke his family (Sahih al-Bukhari 2024). Standing much of it, especially the last third, is the sunnah of effort. Destroying Fajr is not.

Can I do i'tikaf at home?

Classical i'tikaf is in a masjid. A home retreat (less social media, more Quran, a room set aside) is a good deed with a different name. Do not call it i'tikaf if you want the word to keep its fiqh. Do the deed anyway.

What if I miss an odd night?

The next one is still in the last ten. The even nights are still in the last ten. Shame is not a search strategy. Stand the night that is in front of you.

Leave the 27th on the poster. Put water by the bed. Learn the short dua until you can say it in the dark. The night that is better than a thousand months will not introduce itself. It will find a person who was already awake.
